Rankings
Every ABC member has a 3-digit ranking from 100-999. 1st year ABC officials start off with a ranking of 900. Veteran officials who have had prior experience in other chapters start off with a 500 ranking and are ranked appropriately by the Board of Directors as soon as possible.
What do the rankings mean?
This ranking system is adopted by several THSBOA chapters across the state. The lower the ranking the higher the level of basketball you are eligible to call.
- 100-150 – State & Regionals
- 100-499 – Playoffs
- 100-399 – Varsity 3-Man
- 100-499 – Varsity 2-Man
- 300-850 – Sub Varsity
- 400-999 – Junior High
How do I know my ranking?
Your ranking is listed on your Arbiter profile.
How was I ranked?
Rankings are based on the observations of the Board of Directors. This past offseason, the BOD took the previous year’s rankings and discussed if we felt like specific officials needed to move up, down or stay the same. Every official was discussed. After that discussion, each board member personally filled out a ranking survey that we established on surveymonkey.com. The scores were averaged and a new rankings list was established. From that list the board had another discussion and the preseason rankings for the 2020-21 season were finalized.
How often am I ranked?
The Board of Directors have agreed to go through the same ranking process we did in the offseason 3 times per year; once in the offseason, once before district starts and once at the end of the year.
How do I improve my ranking?
The best way to improve your ranking is to improve your officiating. There are a number of ways to do this and it starts in the offseason. Go to camp, work summer league basketball, study the rules book, ask officials for feedback, watch film, find officiating videos on the internet, etc. If we’re not moving forward then we’re moving backwards. We’re constantly looking for ways to improve our game first. If you think your ranking doesn’t reflect your ability then ask your designated board rep for feedback and to observe you.
